Parthian congratulates
Deborah Kay Davies for her book, Grace Tamar and Laszlo the Beautiful
for winning the Wales Book of the Year award on 15 June. It was a great
evening of celebrating the best of Welsh literature for 2009!

It's been a busy summer
for Parthian which is just the way we like it. George Brinley Evans gave
a talk on George Ewart Evans at Glamorgan University on 1 April while
David Mathew Scott read from his forthcoming novel The Ground Remembers
at the Laugharne Weekend Fest on 4 April. On the 20th Glen Peters launched
an ebook edition of his novel, Mrs D'Silva's Detective Instincts and
the Shaitan of Calcutta at the London Book Fair. On the 29th, Jordi
Coca was at Bangor University talking about the translation of his novel,
Under the Dust. And that was just April!
May had its own host
of events: Chimera launched at Trinity University College on
the 12th, closely followed by a second launch at the Dylan Thomas Centre
in Swansea on the 14th. Both were resounding successes and the contributors
all read excerpts from their favourite pieces.

Not willing to waste
any time, Parthian launched the Almanac: The Yearbook of Welsh Writing
in English at the Margiad Evans Centenary Conference at the National
Library in Aberystwyth on 15 May. A few short days later Nu: Fiction
and Stuff was launched at the Hay-on-Wye festival. The Chimera ladies
also made an appearance and To Bury the Dead by Ignacio De Pison
also made its debut at Hay.
Graham
Hartill, Lyndon Davies and David Greenslade all helped finish off the
month at the Hay Poetry Jamboree on 28-30 May at the Oriel Gallery, Salem
Chapel.
On the 2 June Chimera
hosted a night of readings at the Dylan Thomas Boathouse and on 4 June
Nu: Fiction and Stuff had its night at the Boathouse. The same
day Aled Islwyn and John Sam Jones were reading at the Wales Millenium
Centre in Cardiff. 10 June saw the launch of Glen Peters' Mrs D'Silva's
Detective Instincts and the Saitan of Calcutta at Waterstones in
Piccadilly Circus, London. A few short days later on the 12th of June
Mrs D'Silva's hosted a night of reading and dancing thanks to
the India Dance Wales troupe at the Rhos-y-gilwen Arts Centre in Pembrokeshire.

15 June was an exciting
and highly anticipated night; Parthian and friends headed to Cardiff for
a night of celebration at the Wales Book of the Year awards where Deborah
Kay Davies was prounounced the winner.
And the summer isn't
over yet! 16 June sees Parthian back in London at the Pages of Hackney
Bookstore promoting Glen Peters' Mrs D'Silva's. Two more events
are scheduled for 18 June for Mrs D'Silva's, one at Wellfield
Bookstore in Cardiff and later that evening a discussion hosted by County
Library Barry featuring Glen Peters and Jim Bowen talking about writing
on India and Africa. 23 June sees the Nu gang hosting a night
of readings at the Dylan Thomas Centre in Swansea.
And In
Other News...
Parthian has been
participating in some Trinity Univeristy College events, most notably
the awarding of the prize for best travel piece to Elizabeth Crowder in
the anthology The Places We Go, a collection of students' experiences
abroad published by the International office.

Some
Chimera writers also have some exciting news: Jessie Ledbetter,
a GO Wales placement this summer, has been shortlisted for the Bristol
Short Story competition and will be published in this year's anthology.
Congratulations Jessie and good luck!

Sarah
Tanner, also a Parthian GO Wales placement in 2007, entered the Earlyworks
Press Myth and Legend Stories Competition and is being published in their
anthology; congratulations Sarah!
