Body Beautiful

by Ifor Thomas

In Ifor Thomas we have a real 21st Century voice; a voice that can make itself heard above the roar of traffic and the voices of kids as they come out of school. Ifor's is the kind of poetic voice we need in these loud times. Listen to it. Listen to it now.

About The Book

Body Beautiful is a collection of poetry exploring the unexpected challenges that life can bring and the main theme is of how to take on adversity. Described as ‘his most stern and introspective work to date’, the collection is centred around the author’s battle with prostrate cancer and deals with his journey from his diagnosis through to his successful recovery.

Although the poetry is often sobering, stern and occasionally bleak, they frequently display Thomas’s characteristic humour and irony. It is introspective, emotional and humorous.

Beginning as a journal about his experiences of suffering from cancer, Body Beautiful was not intended to be a book of poetry. However, Thomas believed that his poetry could be of benefit to other men suffering from prostrate cancer and could help raise awareness of the condition.

About The Author

Ifor Thomas was born in Haverford West in 1949 and currently lives in Cardiff. Formerly a short story writer, he eventually moved into writing and performing poetry. He has helped to drive performance groups such as Cabaret 246, The Horse’s Mouth and Working Title Writers. Known for his lively performances, Ifor has read his poetry whilst drenched with water, revving a chainsaw or wearing a lavatory pan on his head. He has read at poetry slams, jazz clubs and on street corners. Now, he has moved away from performing and is focusing upon the written word.

Ifor’s performances have earned him several awards. In 1992 he won the John Tripp Award for Spoken Poetry. He was a prize winner in the Cardiff International Poetry Competition in 1995 and received the British Airways Fiction Writer of the Year Award in 2000.

Body Beautiful has been short-listed for this year’s The Wales Book of the Year Award, in the English Language category, the UK’s only bilingual literary prize.
