This anthology commissioned from some of Wales’ leading poets is inspired by the legend of St Melangell. Parthian will donate £1 to St Melangell’s Centre for each copy sold. Forward by Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury
Three hundred years ago, Prince Brochwel was hunting hares in mid-Wales. He saw Melangell at prayer in a clearing, while the hares took shelter beneath the folds of her cloak. He stopped the hunt. Something about her made him see things differently and do things differently. Impressed by Melangell's sanctity, he gave her the land as a place of refuge for both people and animals.
The restoration of her church and shrine in Wales in the early 1990’s created a wholly unexpected fusion of poetic ideas. Many of the leading poets of Wales found themselves caught up in this event, and some of the results are printed here.
Norman Schwenk is the former director of Cardiff University Creative Writing department and has written and edited several poetry collections. Anne Cluysenaar is a poet and editor of poetry magazine Scintilla. This is their first joint editorial project.
